I had never visited Southend nor tasted Jellied Eels so me and the Magic Bus headed East until we almost ran out of land in search of the Rochford Hundred rugby club – the new venue for the Essex chapter rally
The club house laid on full english breakfasts and a selection of hot food in the evening at very reasonable prices and there were some great takeaway concessions on site for late night munchies including Leon Lewis’s fantastic range of veggie options . This years event was christened the ‘Givin it Large’ rally in memory of Marlon Greaves the charismatic Essex chapter member who died in a tragic motorcycle accident on his way back from Europe on 24th March 2007 with patches and rally T's both bearing a cool tribal logo.
The rugby field which
doubles as the camping area had plenty of shade if you wanted it and was
expansive enough to get away from the live music if you so desired
and there was a small but select trader village |

Mystery Tour ~ Returning |

CLICK HERE FOR MORE 'SLOW RIDE' PIX On our return from the scenic ‘Mystery Tour’ rideout the first ever Marlon Greaves ‘slow ride’ game was held with a dedicated ‘Marlon Greaves’ trophy A mass release of memorial balloons was also staged on behalf of Great Ormond Street Hospital - Marlon’s favorite charity.
The entertainment
standard was
exceptionally high for a smaller event with Storm (a female fronted rock
covers band) and headliners ‘The Cruisin’ Mooses’ (a superb bunch of session
musicians) on the Friday and an absolute coup by chapter
director Vincent on the Saturday
in procuring the legendary ‘Hamsters’ who in all my years as a musician
had never actually had the opportunity to see and they were as great
live as everybody says – unfortunately I didn’t manage to catch any pix
of them !
So
now I have visited Southend - not in the course of the rally
I hasten to add but by virtue of
getting lost trying to find
my way back to the M25 on the Sunday
...
the
jellied eels on
the other hand are a
delicacy I regrettably had to forego – maybe next year ? |
